They are famous American rock band who were formed in Los Angeles, California during the year 1965. The band had ray Manzarek, the Keyboardist, John Densmore, the Drummer and Jim Morrison, the vocalist and Robby Krieger, the guitarist. They were one of the most controversial rock arts in 1960s owing to wild and poetic lyrics of Morrison and his unpredictable stage acts. After the death of Morrison in 1971, the rest of member pursued as a trio till they finally disbanded for their good in 1973. Though the career of the Doors ended during 1973, the popularity of the group has not failed. According to Recording Industry Association of America, the band has sold more than thirty two million albums in United states alone.
The band originated with an accidental meeting between fellow alumni of UCLA school, Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison on Venice beach in California during July 1965. Morrison informed Manzarek that he has been doing some song writing and with encouragement from manzarek, they sang the “Moonlight Drive”. Impressed by the lyrics of Morrison, Manzarek suggested that they can form a band.
Manzarek was actually working as keyboardist for a band titled “Rick and the Ravens” along with his brother Jim Manzarek and Rick while john densmore, the drummer was working for the group “The Psychedelic rangers” and they he knew Manzarek from the mediation classes. Densmore joined the band along with members of the Ravens and Pat Sullivan, the bass player also joined the cew. They recorded a demo album with six songs in 1965. They circulated this album widely as bootleg recording. They recruited Robby Krieger as the Guitarist and the final lineup – Manzarek, Morrison, Densmore and Kreiger was complete. The band stole their name from a William Blake’s poem “The Marriage of Heaven and hell”. The line “if the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite” is the line which they used to get their name as per the documentary in their album “When You’re Strange”.
The group started to play in London fog club and they got graduated soon. The president of Elektra records Mr. Joc Holzman spotted them and after watching the performance of band in two sets at Whisky a Go Go, he asked them to sign up with Elektra Records, which marked a long and fruitful partnership with engineer Bruce Botnick and Rothchild. Their debut album was released in 1967 during January first week. Their first single “Break On through” was a big success and their second single “Light My Fire” became the first single of Elektra records to get to top position in the Billboard chart and sold more than a million copies.
