The Metallica – Top Heavy Metal Band in US

Metallica is an American heavy metal band who formed in the city of Los Angeles in California during the year 1981. The group was founded by Lars Ulrich, the Drummer who posted an ad in the local newspaper. Metallica’s lineup mainly consisted of James Hetfield, the vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Ulrich the Drummer and Kirk Hammett, the lead guitarist when going through many bassists. Robert Trujillo is the bass guitarist at present.

The early released of Metallica included instrumentals, fast tempos and very aggressive music which placed them in the top four of thrash metal genre along with Megadth, Anthrax and slayer during the development of this genre into a famous style. The group got a good fan base in underground music community and they became more popular with their album “Master of Puppets” released in 1986 which is considered as the heaviest and thrash metal albums. The band achieved great success with their album Metallica in the year 1991 which got into top position in Billboard 200. With the release of Metallica, the band enhanced its musical direction which resulted in album which was more appealing to an mainstream audience. In the year 2000, Metallica was one among few artists that filed a lawsuit for sharing the copyright protected materials of their band for free without the consent from the band members against Napster, an online music sharing service. They came with a settlement and Napster soon became a service for pay and use. Despite becoming top on Billboard 200, the release in St. Anger estranged lots of fans with snare drums of steel sounding and expulsion of Guitar Solos. There was a film which documented St. Anger’s recording process under the name Some Kind of Monster.

Metallica released 9 studio albums, two EPs, 2 live albums and 24 music videos along with 45 singles. The band has received 9 Grammy awards and has made 5 consecutive debut albums at Top position in Billboard 200 making their band as the first one to do so and this record was met later by Dave Matthews band. Metallica, the album released by the band in 1991 got sold more than fifteen million copies in US and twenty two million copies overall which made it as twenty fifth top selling album in their country. In the year 2009 during December, the band got as the top selling album in Sound scan era and they surpassed the album record of Come on Over by Shania Twain which was released in 1997. The band has sold more than hundred million records including the latest album which they released recently titled “Death Magnetic”. As of Dec. 2009, Metallica is 4th highest selling music artist since the era of Sound Scan started to track sales on 25th May 1991 which sold totally 52 million albums in US alone.
